SHAH ALAM: There is no need for Selangor to hold snap election following the proposed redelineation of constituency by the Election Commission (EC).
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said his government could not betray the mandate given by the people of Selangor to the opposition coalition in the last general election.
“There is no need (for snap election) as the mandate given by voters in Selangor in 2013 is very big and the mandate is for five years,” he told reporters after attending a State Government Agencies Monthly Assembly here today.
He was commenting on a call by DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang for Selangor to hold a snap election following the redelineation proposal which was alleged to have deliberately changed the map of the state.
Apart from Lim, several other opposition coalition leaders also questioned the redelineation exercise announced by EC on Thursday which was seen as a move to ensure Barisan Nasional victory in the general election.
Elaborating further, Mohamed Azmin said the state government would be studying the redelineation proposals before making any protest on the matter.
He said his party would also take legal action against the parties concerned if the delineation was seen as not according to set terms or provisions.
“We are studying (the redelineation) and this evening, I will meet with a team of lawyers to look into the possibility of taking legal action if there were grounds for the move,” he said.
EC secretary Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh had earlier announced the redelineation exercise was implemented under Clause (2) Article 113 of the Federal Constitution and amendments to Clause (2) Article 14 of Sabah State Constitution which was gazetted on Aug 18.
Under the redelineation, EC is also proposing a new seat, Damansara which encompassed the Petaling Jaya Utara seat with more than 150,000 voters. --Bernama
