Education Ministry mulls updating road safety regulations in front of schools

SUNGAI SIPUT: The Education Ministry is mulling updating road regulations in front of schools to ensure the safety of students.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kalamanathan said they need to tighten the regulations due to the increasing number of road accidents involving students.

“This will include reducing the speed limit, making the yellow lines more prominent and making speed bump a mandatory feature in front of schools nationwide.

“Our ministry will also cooperate with the Road Transport Department to educate drivers on road regulations near schools.

“I am very disappointed with the attitude of some drivers who ignore road safety near schools," he said after presenting the Anugerah Derma Siswa 2016 to Lafarge here today.

He was commenting on recent fatal incidents involving students near their schools.

In the latest incident yesterday, a 10-year-old pupil was killed after he was rammed by a lorry while crossing the road in front of his school in Bagan Serai.
