Ali Tinju detained over threat against Bersih chairman

PUTRAJAYA: Police have detained Gerakan Merah leader Mohamad Ali Baharom for allegedly threatening to inflict injury on Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said that Ali, also known as Ali Tinju, was later released on bail.

"We detained and released him on bail after recording his statement.

"This is the same action we took against Jelutong member of parliament Jeff Ooi and others.

"When I called him for questioning at 8am, he arrived soon after at 8.30am and we detained him, recorded his statement and released him on bail," he said after launching the 1Aman Week event, here today.

He also also warned certain quarters against blindly accusing the police of practising double standards. Khalid added it was best to ask the police first before making baseless accusations.

Ali was quoted as saying that he would "ambush" Chin in the near future, following her confirmation that the Bersih 5 rally will take place on Nov 19.

He allegedly told an online portal: "Don't challenge us or we will make it so that her (Chin’s) legs point upwards and her head points downwards."

Chin said she had no plans to lodge a report against Ali. However, Teratai assemblyman Tiew Way Keng lodged a police report against him on Sept 20.
