BN special committee on EC redelineation to meet next week

PASIR SALAK: Barisan Nasional's (BN) special committee on the proposed redelineation of electoral borders will hold its first meeting on Thursday.

BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who is the committee chairman, said the secretaries-general from all BN component parties and state liason committees would discuss the issue during the meeting.

"We will gather all objections and submit them to the Election Commission (EC) before Oct 14," he said after opening the Pasir Salak Umno division delegates' meeting here today.

Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary-general, said the redelineation proposal has nothing to do with the party or the coalition.

"This exercise is usually carried out every eight or 12 years by the EC, which is an independent body.

"They (the Opposition) have been accusing Umno and BN, but we did not do it," he said.

He also stressed that the redelineation was just a proposal.

"We also have a right to object to the proposal made by the EC.

"There has been a lot of unhappiness on both sides regarding this issue," he said.

He said the redelineation was proposed because there had been an increase in the total population.

"During the recent Umno supreme council meeting, we discussed the issue where certain areas have a higher number of a certain race.

"We want multi-racial parliamentary constituencies," he said.

He admitted that the protest grew louder this time around compared to previous redelineation exercises.

He said among the affected parliamentary constituencies were Pasir Salak, Bentong and Tapah.
