DAP's Teh dares Guan Eng to implement term limit reform

GEORGE TOWN: DAP's Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu has reiterated his call for the state leadership to take the lead in limiting the chief ministership tenure to two terms.

The maverick lawmaker said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and the DAP should pave the way, as they have constantly been preaching about political reform.

He added that the term limit should also apply to the position of prime minister and menteri besar.

"It is pointless to keep harping on political reform when he (Lim) is not doing anything about it. I appeal to Lim and the DAP to take the lead starting with Penang.

"He has the resources now and he should prove his sincerity by taking the lead with his position as the chief minister," he told newsmen here yesterday.

Teh was commenting on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) pro-tem vice-president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir's remarks that his party will propose limiting the prime minister’s post to two terms if they form the government.

Mukhriz had said that although his father, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the pro-tem chairman of PPBM, was the country’s longest-serving prime minister, holding the post for 22 years, it was time to move on because of the current Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
