Offer for Rela officers to control traffic near schools gets green light

KUALA LUMPUR: The People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela)’s offer to conduct traffic control services near school compounds has been given the thumbs up by the Education Ministry.

Its director-general, Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof, said the ministry has instructed the school management division to immediately discuss the matter with relevant authorities.

“The Education Ministry takes seriously the safety of students on the road while heading to and from school. Several incidents in recent days have caused not only injuries but also fatalities.

“In view of the offer, the ministry has asked the school management division to hold a meeting with the Home Ministry, Rela and police to discuss the best methods to implement the programme, including identifying schools in high-risk and accident-prone locations nationwide,” he said in a statement today.

Khair also reminded all State education departments, District education departments, as well as all schools to abide by the circulars relevant to the issue.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had on Sunday offered Rela’s services to control traffic near school compounds to avoid the risk of fatal accidents involving students as occurred in Terengganu and Perak recently.
