Hungary offers expertise to Perak to tackle annual floods

IPOH: Hungary has offered its expertise in water management technology, which could help Perak and other states prevent annual floods.

Hungarian ambassador to Malaysia Attila Kali said water management was one of the business opportunities that the country had identified in Perak.

He said Hungary had dealt with floods for centuries and had managed to overcome the problem through efficient water management.

"We have many big rivers, which pose a challenge to us on how to manage the water effectively.

"Basically, we have learnt how to manage these rivers and control the floods over the years," he said after attending the Hungary-Perak Business Seminar here today.

Using the latest technology and reinforcement of dams, Kali said his country managed to prevent floods from recurring as often as before.

State Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zahir Abdul Khalid said Perak could adopt the water management technology from Hungary via a cooperation with the country.

"They have also built new rivers. This is the opportunity for us to learn from them on water management," he said.
