Smoke grenade found are of same make used by local law enforcement

KUALA LUMPUR: The two smoke grenades found near the Air Panas People's Housing Project are of the same model used by local law enforcement authorities.

City police chief Datuk Amar Singh said this was confirmed by the bomb squad, which had earlier inspected the objects.

"Checks by the bomb squad revealed that the smoke grenades are the same ones used by the police, weapons storage facility and Federal Reserve Unit (FRU). We also do not rule out the possibility the (same type of) smoke grenades are used by the army.

"The forensic unit obtained seven fingerprints from the two smoke grenades," he said.

The smoke grenades were believed to have been produced in July 2009, at a factory in Batu Arang.

Police, said Amar, would check with the factory to find out if the smoke grenade from the series made for the authorities or other parties.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 for possession of explosives.

Earlier today, an FRU officer discovered the two smoke bombs near the Air Panas People's Housing Project here.

While carrying out a patrol with several colleagues at 3.30pm, the man noticed an object wrapped in a white plastic bag which he deemed suspicious.

Upon inspection, he discovered the two smoke bombs with the words 'Grenade Hand Coloured Smoke Blue MK IV Lot 15 SME 6-09 CCC' stamped on it.

He immediately alerted his superiors and the Setapak police patrol unit.
