(UPDATED) Three injured in 11-vehicle accident at 'pasar malam'

PERMATANG PAUH: Three people were injured, including one seriously, in an accident involving four cars and seven motorcycles at the Ampang Jajar night market here this evening.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Superintendent Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said initial investigations revealed that the accident happened when a car, heading towards Taman Arowana from Permatang Pauh, knocked into a pedestrian when he arrived at the night market.

He said at the time of the incident, the victim was crossing the road to get to his motorcycle.

"After knocking down the pedestrian, the driver lost control of the car, causing it to skid and ram into an oncoming car.

"The impact of the crash caused the driver of the second car to lose control of the car and subsequently knocked into the seven motorcycles and another two cars which were parked by the side of the road.

"The pedestrian sustained serious injuries on the head while another two men, who were seated on their motorcycles, escaped with minor injuries," he said.

Nik Ros Azhan said those injured were sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.

"We have yet to identify the cause of the incident," he added.

The case is investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
