School counselor among 16 militant suspects arrested, says Education Ministry

PUTRAJAYA: A school counselor was among 16 people arrested in a crackdown on suspected militant activity in Selangor, Kelantan, Perak, Kedah, Penang and Sabah recently.

The Education Ministry said it was told that the teacher - nabbed in the operation which was conducted from September 21 to October 6 - is attached to a school in one of the states.

Education Department director-general Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said the ministry will not tolerate any instances of its teachers, staff or even students being involved in militant activities.

“We will continue to give our full cooperation to the police to ensure such activities do not spread,” he said in a statement today.

Khair also issued a stern warning to all teachers to stay clear and to not get involved in militant activities as it can bring a negative impact to the country and tarnish the teaching profession.

He said there will be no compromise if any ministry staff are caught in such cases. This, said Khair, included the spread of slanderous statements via social media, or involvement in any anti-government activities.
