Electricity theft in squatter areas spells huge losses for Sabah

SANDAKAN: Sabah utility company estimates a RM64 million loss this year due to 178,000 squatter homes stealing electrical power illegally in the state.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) senior general manager (asset management) Muhamad Nazri Pazil said the illegal hook-ups have also been identified as the main cause of the frequent power disruptions.

A two-day integrated operation involving several agencies during weekend was held at squatter areas at Batu Sapi and Batu Tiga here.

“In that operation, SESB seized cables of different sizes weighing 300kg, which is believed to have been used to steal power.

“This operation will be conducted more often as it also means preventing people from getting injured or electrocuted through the illegal connections,” he said in a statement today.
