Sabah Electricity assures no power cuts for Aidilfitri period

TAMPARULI: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) has assured that there will be no power outages in Sabah during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations next week, Sabah Media reported.

SESB Chief Executive Officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said that efforts are underway to enhance the power supply capacity in Sabah and Labuan through the deployment of six rental generators in Sandakan, Labuan, Lahad Datu, and Tawau.

The introduction of these generators is expected to prevent the power rationing experienced previously, with full operational capacity set to commence in May.

"We anticipate that the festive season, especially Aidilfitri, will be free from power cuts as we have increased our capacity with generators in East Coast Sandakan and Labuan, adding more than 50 megawatts to our current capacity.

"Within the next two weeks, this will increase to 75 megawatts, and by the end of May, we aim to boost it by an additional 100 megawatts, thus eliminating the need for power rationing," Yaakob said during the Seikhlas Budi Sesuci Ramadan SESB programme at the Ubudiyyah Mosque in Tamparuli.

Yaakob further mentioned that the six generators would be rented for six months, subject to the grid situation in Sabah.

"Yesterday, we recorded a new peak load of 1,149 megawatts. If the hot weather continues and peak load rises further, we may need to extend the rental of these generators," he added.
