An RM8,000 cash rebate is available when customers purchase a Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid, while stocks last.
The Camry hybrid, which is priced at about RM175,000, has an actual retail price of over RM250,000 before incentives which qualify it as an energy efficient vehicle (EEV) under the National Automotive Policy.
Launched in April 2015, the car has been well received in Malaysia.
The Hybrid Synergy Drive which powers the Camry consists of a 2.5-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor.
Toyota said the drive system is the product of almost 20 years of experience with hybrid cars since Toyota introduced the world’s first mass-produced hybrid model in 1997.
The hybrid system in the Camry can make use of either the engine or electric motor at a single time, or both, if required. Toyota said this allows both power units to be used to maximum efficiency, giving the best performance and fuel efficiency.
The 2.5-litre 2AR-FXE inline-four engine runs on an Atkinson cycle, a type of engine configuration ideal for hybrid vehicles.
Based on the 2AR-FE, and with the same bore and stroke but with unique cams and pistons, the engine has a large valve overlap, giving reduced cylinder charge, torque and power output figures, but improved efficiency.
The total system output is 205ps with 213 Nm of torque from the engine and 270 Nm from the electric motor.
It is possible to glide silently at speeds of up to 40 kph without engaging the petrol engine. In this mode, the vehicle is a zero-emission vehicle.
To maximise fuel savings, Toyota has also introduced an ECO mode which extends driving range even further.
The Camry Hybrid is equipped with an Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT), which splits power to the generator as well as the front wheels. The system is a common feature of all Toyota hybrid models.
The current iteration developed by Toyota is said to offer improved driving performance, while reducing energy drain and noise levels.
Another practical feature, which is especially welcome in the Malaysian climate, is an air-conditioning system operated with a compressor that is driven electrically. This ensures that the air-conditioner is always on, even when the internal combustion engine is switched off.
A frequent worry among owners with hybrid cars is the possibility of replacing a damaged battery pack.
Camry Hybrid owners can have additional peace of mind as the Hybrid battery pack has an eight-year warranty (terms and conditions apply).
This is on top of a five-year full warranty with no limit on mileage given by Toyota for all its passenger cars.
