UniFi to double speed at same price starting Jan 1

KUALA LUMPUR: KUALA LUMPUR: Starting January next year, UniFi home customers can expect their broadband speed to be upgraded while paying the same price.

TM’s Consumer and SME executive vice-president Imri Mokhtar said the “upgrading” exercise would be done gradually next year.

“It won’t be happening at a flick of a switch on January 1. It will be subject to technical availability and some challenges may arise upon implementation on the ground.”

Imri said TM would be communicating actively with its customers on the matter.

“We will be communicating directly with our customers via email, SMS, telephone and mail by the end of December so all our broadband customers will know what they can expect January onwards.

Customers would be able to reach us through various channels like social media, through live-chat, the nearest TM Point or through our call centres,” Imri added.

TM group chief executive officer Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa and Imri are confident the take-up would be encouraging as customers would get more for the same price they are currently subscribing to.

At present, TM has 900,000 UniFi customers, of whom 70 per cent are already subscribing to TM’s 10Mbps and above broadband service.

“The (digital) consumption of the average Malaysian is going through the roof these days,” said Imri.

When asked if the move would impact the company’s revenue, Zamzamzairani said it would not.

“We know the trends are moving this way, we have been planning to do this anyway. It is an execution and balancing act, but there is a plan,” he said.

When pressed further, he revealed that the impact on earnings might be “just a little”.

“Speeds will change, the prices don’t change,” he stressed.
