JOHOR BARU: Police confirmed the discovery of the body of a 6th patient killed in the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) Intensive Care Unit fire.
Johor Baru Selatan district police chief assistant commissioner Sulaiman Salleh said the dead comprised four women and two men, all in their 50s.
A seventh patient trapped in the ICU was rescued, and has been transferred to the Sultan Ismail Hospital.
Eight ICU staff members who were on duty at the time survived.
"The fire began at the ICU Selatan ward. There were 294 patients and 193 staff at the main building when the fire broke out at 9am.
"Initial checks showed that the fire may have been caused by faulty wiring or a short circuit, but we are still investigating. However, there is no criminal element in the fire," said Sulaiman.
