Education Ministry seeking feedback on proposed replacement of UPSR with PBS

KUALA NERANG: The Education Ministry will meet with Parent-Teacher Associations and schools to get feedback on the proposed plan to replace Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) with the School-Based Assessment (PBS).

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the proposed plan is already at the final stage and feedback from all quarters, especially schools and parents, is important to strengthen the plan.

Mahdzir said it is high time that UPSR is replaced with a more suitable assessment for children to prevent them from becoming too examination-oriented.

“At the ministry level, we have already prepared the plan and we can implement it at any time – but it is better to gain feedback from all quarters before we take further steps,” he said after opening the Kuala Kijang Mosque here this morning.

He said under the plan, examinations will comprise about 50 per cent of overall scores for students, with the balance coming from students’ emotional, spiritual and physical aspects based on their participation in school.

The UPSR examination was introduced in 1988 as a national examination for all Year Six Pupils before they entered secondary school.
