HSA fire was not caused by exploding oxygen tank nor charging handphone

JOHOR BARU: It was neither an explosion from an oxygen tank nor a charging handphone that caused the fire in the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HAS) Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday.

Fire and Rescue Department Investigation Division assistant director-general Edwin Galan Teruki said at a press conference here.

The investigation team with personnel from Putrajaya and Johor have concluded their findings and gathered all samples from the scene, which has been brought back to the laboratory for an analysis.

“As we are still analysing (the evidence), I cannot tell what is the most likely cause of the fire. We can only reveal that after the analysis is completed,” Edwin said.

“However, I can say that it was neither an oxygen tank nor the fact that someone was charging a handphone, as speculated on social media,” he added.

He also said that the team’s objective was not only to find out the cause of the fire but also to see if the site had all the safety aspects and precautionary measures in place.

The forensic probe ended at 5.30pm and the team is heading back to Putrajaya today.

The Health Ministry also reportedly slammed calls to reintroduce a ban on handphones and smart devices in critical zones, as there was no proof that such devices could interfere with electronic medical equipment such as life support systems.
