Malaysian-made EV soon?

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia could soon have its own electric car if a joint venture with China's BAIC goes according to plan.

Malaysian company Amber Dual Sdn Bhd is currently working with the Chinese automotive giant to develop a pure electric vehicle for the Malaysian market.

The electric car, the EV200 is currently undergoing homologation testing in Malaysia.

It will have a top speed of 125 kph, with a range of 200kms.

Equipped with a 30kwh battery(with full capacity of 53kwh), the car can be charged within six hours at home or two hours with a fast charger.

Amber Dual Sdn Bhd, the local partner of the venture said the completely-knocked-down (CKD) version of the car is expected to be available by the second quarter of next year.

There are no indications on pricing as yet.

The second stage of the joint venture may see the EV200 being locally manufactured in Malaysia in two years, said Amber Dual managing director Shabudin Md Saman.

The company is aiming to sell 5,000 of the cars per annum.

He was speaking to reporters at Malaysia Autoshow 2016 at the Mines International Exhibition and Trade Centre.

Earlier, the exhibition was launched by Minister of International Trade and Industry Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
