Association tells travellers to exchange old Indian rupee bills with banks in India by Dec 30, 2016

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association of Money Services Business is calling on those in possession of the Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes to register their details with the organisation.

“For the public in Malaysia in possession of the existing Rs500 and/or Rs1,000 notes and not traveling to India by Dec 30, you may register your details to get the latest update if there are any pertinent developments on the matter.

“For those traveling to India by Dec 30, you may exchange the existing notes with the banks in India or the Reserve Bank in India,” the association said in a statement today.

The association is currently engaging with all relevant parties including currency wholesalers to find a workable solution on the issue of the demonetisation of the existing Rs500 and Rs1,000 bills.

Those who wish to register can call 03-77225808, or email your details (name, nationality, e-mail address, mobile number and Indian rupee amount in possession (Rs500 and Rs1,000) to admin@mamsb.org.my.

On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the current Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes would no longer be valid and that they would be replaced with the new Rs500 and Rs2,000 notes from Nov 10.
