Maria Chin detained under Sosma

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah is being investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma).

This was confirmed by non-governmental (NGO) body Lawyers for Liberty today.

"Maria has shockingly being detained under Sosma and will be detained further. No remand hearing was held.

"Under Sosma detention, Maria can be detained for a further 28 days. We are shocked and appalled by this abuse of power," the NGO said through its Twitter account.

Police have also obtained a two-day remand for nine other people who were detained yesterday.

Chin as well as Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos were detained yesterday ahead of the Bersih demonstration.

Meanwhile, Bersih, through its official Twitter account, said Pasir Pinji assemblyman Howard Lee has been arrested in KL Sentral at 2.12pm.

Lee was taken to the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.
