Women's groups march to Parliament to demand Bersih chairman's release

KUALA LUMPUR: A police barricade stopped 250 protesters who had gathered to demand the release of Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah from entering Parliament.

A number of representatives were however allowed in. They included Former Women's Aid Organisation head Ivy Josiah.

Earlier, Ampang PKR Member of Parliament Zuraida Kamaruddin also went in after marching with the group, which had earlier gathered at Padang Merbok.

They started walking from Padang Merbok at 10.45am and reached Parliament almost 30 minutes later.

The coalition of women's groups, dubbed Women for Maria, aimed to hand over a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to demand Maria's release.

Maria was detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), a day before the electoral reform group's planned rally in KL.

Maria's sister Cynthia Chin said her family was shocked and devastated by the arrest.

"My sister is not a terrorist to be detained this way," she added.
