Malaria mayhem: Those returning from Pos Kemar, Gerik urged to see doctors

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu health authorities have advised those who have just returned from Pos Kemar in Gerik, Perak, to seek medical attention, following a malaria outbreak there.

State Health Department director Dr Mohammad Omar said seeking medical attention could avoid any untoward incidents.

He said the authorities are concerned as they learnt that some of the local Orang Asli community are visiting their acquaintances in Gerik.

"We want them to come to the nearest clinic for checks," he said.

Dr Mohammad said Terengganu has already recorded seven malaria cases this year. All the cases, he said, were found to have been caused by animals such as apes and monkeys.

He said three areas that are still under observation are Sungai Berua, Hulu Terengganu; Sungai Pergam, Kemaman; and Sungai Sayap in Besut.

"Close monitoring has been carried out on 140 houses in Kemaman, 12 houses in Besut and 48 houses in Hulu Terengganu," he said.

He said clean mosquitoes nets with anti-malaria medicine have been distributed and fogging conducted every six months at the areas.

Mohammad said scheduled screenings from house to house in the areas have also been done by medical officers.
