Bersih leader summoned by police, provide statement on Maria Chin's candlelight vigils

GEORGE TOWN: Bersih 2.0 Northern Region vice-chairman Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon was called to give his statement to the police over the two candlelight vigils for Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah in the state.

Toh and Bersih Secretariat Lee Chung Loon arrived at the Northeast district police headquarters at about 1.30pm today and left at 2.40pm.

They were accompanied by Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin and Kebun Bunga assemblyman Cheah Kah Peng, who is also their lawyer.

This was confirmed by Northeast district police chief Mior Farid Alatrash Wahid, who said that duo was called in to have their statement recorded over the candlelight vigils held on Nov 21 at the state Police Contingent and yesterday, at Padang Kota.

He said this was the normal course of action as the police are investigating the case under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

The section states that a person who does not give the officer in charge of the police district in which the assembly was held, commits an offence, and if convicted shall be liable to a fine not exceeding RM10,000.
