Malacca CM slams anti-Trump protesters for disrespecting US constitution

MALACCA: All citizens must respect their country's national constitution and adhere to all principles laid in it, including on election and voting rights.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron advised Americans who are against president-elect Donald Trump to respect the federal constitution instead of using improper means to protest against him.

"The Americans have decided to elect Donald Trump after Barack Obama's administration, and this is in accordance with America's constitution (which calls for) federal elections every four years.

"I am confident that whatever (goal) anti-Trump protestors have cannot be achieved because (America’s) federal constitution protects a president who is elected legally," Idris said after chairing the state executive council meeting in Seri Negeri here yesterday.

Idris was asked to comment on the alleged funding of anti-Trump protesters by Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros, purportedly aimed at creating civil unrest.

Idris praised Trump for saying what the majority of US citizens wanted to hear during the election campaign.

"Trump is intelligent enough to use emotional campaigning to capture more votes, and this is the right way," he said.

Asked if the purported funding by Soros was sensible, Idris said many quarters have linked street protests against governments across the globe to Soros, but what is more important is for all nations to respect their countries' federal constitutions.

On the much-anticipated high-speed rail project linking Kuala Lumpur to Singapore passing through Malacca, Idris said the proposed station in Malacca would not be in Ayer Keroh.

"The state government has (suggested that) the location be in Alor Gajah, but this is (not final) yet, because we must respect other technical requirements as determined by the project developer, the Land Public Transport Commission and the Transport Ministry.

"However, I want to clarify that the state government proposed that the station be in Durian Tunggal in the Alor Gajah district, and not Ayer Keroh.

"We are still giving time to the technical agencies to study the suitability of the site before (making a final announcement)," he said.
