Najib pledges protection of East M'sians' rights, committed to Malaysia Agreement 1963

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak tonight warned against debating the issue of the secession of Sabah and Sarawak, as the matter is non-negotiable.

Najib stressed that the government is entirely committed to the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“On Sabah and Sarawak seceding – it is a non-negotiable issue. Never ever raise it, as it is against the law.

“I understand that there are certain quarters trying to inculcate parochialism, as though we are trying to take away the rights of the people (of those states) and so on.

“I have said many times in my past speeches that our government is very committed to the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“Whatever we do, we must refer to the agreement. We are now looking at various things – whether follow-up measures are contradictory or not (to the agreement), or whether we have taken their rights away inadvertently,” he said during TV3’s Soal Jawab programme.

The prime minister said the government is willing to correct things if it is deemed that the rights of the people of Sabah and Sarawak have been violated – but this must be done in accordance with the Constitution.
