Two Thai districts affected by foot-and-mouth disease

BURIRUM: The Livestock Development Office in Buriram Province in the Thai Northeast has declared two districts foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) stricken zones.

It also ordered a temporary closure of a local livestock flea market to soon bring the disease under control, Thai News Agency (TNA) reports.

Buriram’s provincial livestock development chief Pojpirat Niamjui reported on Tuesday that FMD has hit 11 villages in four sub-districts of Muang and Lam Plai Mat Districts, prompting his office to have declared the two districts FMD-stricken zones.

Pojpirat told journalists that, as a preventive measure, he has ordered the setting up of checkpoints to bar all movements of livestocks in and out the affected zones, as well as to intensify the spraying of disinfectant at local animal stalls located within a 5-kilometre-radius of the affected areas.

Besides, local cattle are injected with antibiotics and vaccines to prevent or treat them from the disease.

The senior official stressed that the local livestock flea market will remain closed until the disease is under well-control, calling on local farmers to cooperate well and follow his office’s guidance to quickly bring the situation under control.--BERNAMA
