Abused sister of murdered Paya Nahu toddler responding well to treatment

ALOR SETAR: A four-year-old girl who was subjected to physical abuse by the boyfriend of her mother is to undergo psychiatric treatment due to the trauma she had undergone, Kedah Director of Health Datuk Norhizan Ismail said today.

The girl has been placed under the care of a child psychiatrist and is responding positively to the rehabilitation process since her admission to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani on Nov 24.

"She is able to open both her eyes, which were swollen when she was brought to the hospital," he said to Bernama.

Norhizan also said that an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist plans to run hearing tests on the patient before she is discharged from hospital.

He added that the girl is able to get along well with nurses, although she initially shied away from adults.

The patient was admitted to hospital after found badly beaten up, following the discovery of the decomposing body of her two-year-old brother in an ice box at a unit of the Paya Nahu Flats in Sungai Petani on Nov 24.

Police have remanded the children's mother and her boyfriend for seven days from Nov 25 to help in investigations into murder and child abuse. -- BERNAMA
