MCA, Chinese community associations to form legal community to study Syariah Courts Act amendment

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA and Chinese community associations will form a legal committee to look into the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355).

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the amendments have serious implication on the country’s legal system and will affect all races, thus the importance of a detailed study.

“The committee will be led by the MCA’s Legal Bureau.

“It is open to all the Chinese associations for them to send in their legal liaison so that we can work together and brief them from time to time on the situation,” he said after chairing an Interaction Session with the Chinese Guilds and Associations at Wisma MCA here today.

Liow also reiterated MCA's stand that it remains firmly opposed to any bill which runs counter to the spirit and letter of the Federal Constitution.
