Rescuer collapses and dies after completing search mission for missing angler

KUALA BERANG: A Civil Defence Department personnel, who had earlier joined a search for a missing person at Sungai Lut, Jerangtau Barat, collapsed and died shortly after the mission ended.

It is learnt that Mohd Sawal Mohd Yusof, 36, collapsed from exhaustion while coming out of the interior area.

Hulu Terengganu police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said Sawal, who hailed from Kampung Mia, Tanjung Putat in Kuala Berang, had a history of heart disease.

“He had complained to his wife of chest pain at 10am last Friday.

“He had told Anisha that he probably also suffered a stroke and had sought treatment at a hospital.

Sawal had volunteered to join the search today (Saturday) after feeling better but did not inform his superior of his health condition.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel involved in the angler’s search, applied first aid and rushed Sawal by an armoured tracked vehicle to the Hulu Terengganu Hospital.

Sawal is survived by Anisha Jusoh@Jaafar, 33, and two children, aged 10 and six.

The lost angler, Satar Ali, 49, was rescued 25 minutes earlier by another member of the 120-strong search team. He was found in weak condition by villagers who alerted rescue members and sought treatment at the Hulu Terengganu Hospital.

Satar, from Kg Peris, Kuala Berang, was reported missing by his colleagues at 6pm on Tuesday.
