Kuching school alumni turn 20th reunion into Rohingya charity drive

KUCHING: Some 50 alumni of SMK Green Road’s Class of 1996 decided to elevate their 20th annual reunion dinner this year by incorporating a charity aspect to the proceedings.

Moved by the plight of the oppressed Rohingya in Myanmar, the alumni launched a donation campaign and raised RM7,109.80 during the event on Sunday.

Event organiser, Emme Jasmin Ehsan, said the alumni wanted to do something meaningful for the gathering by extending assistance to help the needy.

“All of us have been keeping tabs on the developments affecting the Rohingya in Myanmar and we are deeply moved by their suffering.

“So for this year’s gathering, we decided to organise a donation campaign, which was launched three days prior to the dinner.

“Alhamdulillah, we received an overwhelming response from other former students of the school, and we hope this donation could help lessen the burden of the Rohingya,” she said.

Earlier, Emme handed over a mock cheque of the donation for the “Tabung Kemanusiaan Rohingya Media Prima” to New Straits Times Press Bhd (NSTP)’s Kuching branch manager, Venitia Samuel.

Present were other members of the organising committee for the event, namely Niny Rayer and Siti Kartini Abdul Karim.
