Farewell to a legend: SM Salim dies at 88

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran singer Tan Sri SM Salim passed away at 5.45pm today at his home in Ukay Perdana, after a prolonged illness.

He was 88-years-old.

His passing was confirmed by his grand niece, Ellyna Ali.

The legendary singer, whose hits such as ‘Apa Dah Jadi’ and 'Lagu Zaman' had transcended genres and brought about a resurgence and newfound appreciation of the ‘bangsawan’ and ‘joget’ genre, had been in critical condition over the last four days.

He had been paralysed for the last 17 years and had depended on a wheelchair to move around.

Salim had an immense influence on artistes such as M. Nasir and Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, who have also collaborated with him on numerous occasions.

His friends in the showbiz industry had flocked to his home last night after receiving news that his condition had taken a turn for the worse.
