Immigration officer impersonator caught, armed with fake pistol

ALOR STAR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) nabbed a 52-year-old man last night for impersonating an Immigration Department officer to solicit a bribe.

Kedah MACC director Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohamad said the man, who also carried a fake pistol, was arrested at midnight outside a shopping complex here.

He said initial investigation showed that the man had demanded RM2,000 from a company owner for allegedly hiring illegal immigrant workers.

"The man has been remanded for a week beginning today to facilitate investigations under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting a bribe," Mohd Fauzi said in a statement today.

The man is staring at a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and a fine five times the amount of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
