Police arrest MACC officer impersonator

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a local man for impersonating a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer.

Ampang Jaya district police chief assistant commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the 34-year old man was arrested at the district's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office to assist in the investigations.

He said the arrest was made after a 60-year-old mosque treasurer reported that he was approached at the mosque's office by the imposter, who introduced himself as an MACC officer.

"The suspect alleged discrepancies in the management of the mosque's finances and requested the treasurer to produce cheque books for inspection.

"Later that day, the treasurer received a call from the bank informing him that a cheque was rejected after it had been attempted to cash in.

"Subsequent checks revealed that it had gone missing following the supposed inspection," he said.

Azam also said upon further examination, it was found that the suspect had a criminal record and that his urine test had indicated the presence of Methamphetamine.

"Therefore, a remand application for the suspect was made at the Ampang Court on Jan 24 where he was remanded for four days from Jan 24 to 27."

He said the case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant, which carries a maximum penalty of two years' jail and a fine.
