KUANTAN: A total of 113 students of the an-Nuur Islamic Education Centre, also known as Pondok an-Nuur, in Pantai Sepat, were displaced when their hostel was razed in a fire today.
The centre's founder, Mohktar Senik, said the incident happened at 8pm when all the students were at a nearby mosque, waiting for Isyak prayers.
Fire broke out and quickly spread through the dormitory.
"We estimate losses to be around RM400,000. We are still waiting for a report from Fire and Rescue Department," he said.
Meanwhile, a state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said 24 firemen were deployed to the scene after being alerted to the incident at 8.20pm.
When the firemen arrived, the flames were in full blaze and had almost destroyed the whole dormitory.
"Firemen then worked to control the fire from spreading to another building," he said.
