Jakarta's car-free day

EVERY Sunday morning, Jakarta, the city that is known for its notorious traffic jam, goes car-free.

Started five years ago, the car-free day lasts for five hours — from 6am, all motorised vehicles except buses are barred from entering the capital’s busiest streets, Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin. City folk join the Sunday morning party to exercise, participate in activities specially held for the day or to just enjoy the city’s wide streets.

It is estimated that some 100,000 people gather for the car-free day every Sunday. I enjoy the city on car-free Sundays and look forward to it every time I visit Jakarta.
