Mud flood on MRR2, traffic jams around city after heavy rain [VIDEO]

KUALA LUMPUR: Several areas along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) near the International Islamic University (UIA) in Gombak here were hit by flash floods today after a heavy downpour.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Mohd Sani Harul said heavy rain that started since 3pm had caused the flood water to rise up to 0.5 meters.

It also caused traffic congestion on the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). The situation was back under control after the water receded around 7pm, he said.

Sani also confirmed there was a report that 10 vehicles were damaged due to fallen trees at the carpark in the UIA.

“Clean up operations are being carried out,” he said.

Meanwhile, motorists said mud flood covered three lanes of the MRR2 (Gombak to Ampang stretch) near UIA about 5.15pm, causing traffic jams at the surrounding areas.

It was learnt that roadusers were advised to divert into alternative roads by heading into Danau Kota and Duke Highway.

A 31-second video recorded by one of the roadusers has gone viral on WhatsApp showing a massive mud flood along the stretch.

In the video, the mud appeared to have covered part of the highway and obstructed the traffic flow.

A Wangsa Maju Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said that it was a common occurence in the area during rain due to the stretch's close proximity with a construction site.

He said a team from the station was despatched to the area to pull out a Toyota Estima near the area after it got stuck in the flood.

"The flood lasted about 30 minutes," he said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said as of 8pm, slow moving traffic was reported around some areas in the city, including from Subang to Dataran Prima followed by heavy congestion before the Jalan Duta toll plaza heading towards Bukit Lanjan.
