Feb 18 by-election for Tanjong Datu seat in Sarawak [VIDEO]

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) today announced that the Tanjong Datu by-election in Sarawak will be held on Feb 18.

The by-election was called after its incumbent Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who was also the Sarawak chief minister, died of heart complications on Jan 11. He was 72.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Hashim Abdullah said the nomination date has been fixed on Feb 4, with early voting taking place on Feb 12.

"It will involve a budget of RM997,919 and a manpower of 250 to conduct the by-election," he told reporters after chairing a special meeting to deliberate on the Tanjong Datu by-election today.

Hashim said 9,959 voters listed in the electoral roll would cast their votes. The includes 9,771 regular voters and 188 early voters comprising armed forces and police personnel.

In Sarawak’s 11th state election last year, Adenan garnered 6,360 votes to defeat PKR candidate Jazolkipli Numan, who managed only 468 votes. The PKR candidate lost his deposit.

For the Sungai Air Tawar seat in Selangor, which fell vacant when its incumbent Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik, 58, from Barisan Nasional, died of a heart attack on Tuesday, Hashim said the commission had decided there would be no by-election for it.
