Senior MPK officer to face music over New Year's fireworks incident

SHAH ALAM: A senior Klang Municipal Council (MPK) officer will be dragged to face the council's disciplinary board over the New Year's firework incident at Pandamaran Sports Complex.

The officer, who heads one of MPK's departments, was found responsible for including the firework display in the Fiesta Gegar Klang event.

Selangor government exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah said an internal inquiry carried out by the local government revealed that the officer had managed and overseen the firework display despite the fact that its inclusion was never discussed in any of MPK’s meetings on the festival.

"After going through the council's investigation report, the state government will follow all due process and procedures in taking action against the officer.

"However, the state government is of the opinion that the officer responsible should be brought in front of the MPK Disciplinary Board and be taken action against under the Selangor Public Officers Regulation (Conduct and Discipline) 1995.

"Actions that can be taken against him are, among others, the issuance of a warning, imposition of a fine, having his emolument rights stripped, having his salary increase suspended or his salary cut, demotion and dismissal," Yong said in a statement.

He added that the state government takes the matter seriously, and wants all local government officers to ensure the safety of the public from all aspects in organising activities in the future.
