Pandemonium as firework explosions trigger panic

SUNGAI PETANI: Dataran Jam Besar here became the scene of pandemonium, with members of the public panicking and scattering following loud explosions in the area early this morning.

The incident occurred around 4.48am, causing fear among visitors and traders as the explosion seemed out of control.

Based on a video of the incident circulating today, several individuals were seen playing with fireworks by the roadside before the explosion became uncontrollable, leading to it detonating at ground level.

It is understood that the explosion spread after sparks from the firecrackers ignited other fireworks nearby, causing them to explode simultaneously.

The video, lasting more than two minutes, shows the public in panic and rushing to move their vehicles away from the area.

Meanwhile, the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department in its statement said they only received calls regarding a trash fire at the Aidilfitri bazaar area in Dataran Jam Besar here at 4:55 am. this morning.

Yesterday, Kedah Police Chief Datuk Fisol Salleh reminded the public not to play with firecrackers and to ensure their safety and property are well taken care of.

He said a total of 123 permits or licenses for selling fireworks were approved this Aidilfitri festive season.

"Until April 6, a total of 86 inspections were conducted throughout the districts in this state.

"During the same period, the police also received 17 cases and made 4 arrests related to the Explosives Act during this Aidilfitri celebration period.

"The police will conduct inspections on all fireworks sellers to ensure they comply with the approved permit conditions," he said.
