Fisherman spots woman's body floating in waters off Sandakan

SANDAKAN: The body of a woman believed to be in her 20s was found floating in the open sea off Pulau Nunuyan Laut near here this morning.

A fisherman spotted the body in the water, two nautical miles from the island and alerted a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) boat which was on patrol in the area under Ops Pluto Timur at about 10.15am.

MMEA Maritime District 17 director Captain A. Razak Abd Rahman said MMEA boat 'Kilat 8', together with three other fishing boats, proceeded to the location.

The remains were retrieved and brought back to the Sandakan MMEA base to be handed over to the police for further action, Razak said.

Based on the condition of the body, the woman is believed to have been in the water for more than two days.

Police found no identification documents on the body, which was sent to the Duchess of Kent district hospital for a post-mortem

Initial investigation reveals, however, that it is likely a case of sudden death.
