Farming couple see livelihood swept away by T'ganu floods

SETIU: A farming couple lost RM1,000 worth of kangkung they were preparing to sell when their supplies were swept away by strong flood waters in Kampung Padang Jawi last night.

Zulkepli Md Nor, 55, and his wife, Raja Mariah Raja Dollah, were in the midst of selling a huge stockpile of the vegetable by the road in front of their house when flash flood waters suddenly rose in their area at 7pm.

Zulkepli said they panicked, as it had never happened before.

“My wife and I had plucked the kangkung from the garden near our house the night before.

“The garden is rife with venomous animals, but we gathered the courage to pluck the kangkung, which we usually sell at the nearby market.

“However, since the roads to the market are not accessible due to floods, we decided to sell the vegetables by the roadside near our home,” said Zulkepli.

He added that he had, on occasion, used a boat to sell the kangkung around the village.

“Business is brisk and we were stockpiling the kangkung to meet the great demand for it. It will take a while for us to recover the losses,” said Zulkepli.
