Shah Alam kicks off Car-Free Day with CNY flourish

SHAH ALAM: The inaugural Shah Alam Car-Free Day walk kicked off this morning with a Chinese New Year touch, when it was flagged off with a lion dance performance by Sheng Yi Dragon and Lion Dance troupe.

Organised by the Shah Alam City Council, the Shah Alam Car-Free Day, held at Dataran Kemerdekaan, was attended by around 1,000 people, made up of families with young children in tow, cyclists, roller bladers, skateboarders, as well as hover board and blade scooter enthusiasts.

The walk was flagged off by Shah Alam deputy mayor Shukri Mohamad Hamin at about 7.30am, and saw participants, which included council directors and councillors, moving along a 5km route through the city, down Persiaran Bandaraya, Persiaran Perbandaran, Persiaran Tasik, Persiaran Masjid, Persiaran Dato Menteri and Persiaran Damai.

Shukrin said the aim of the Shah Alam Car-Free Day is to create a community that practices a healthy lifestyle, apart from reducing the use of motor vehicles on the road and minimising carbon footprints.

"We are happy to see an overwhelming response from Shah Alam folk from all walks of life. We have been promoting Car-Free Day since the middle of last year.

“(From now on), Car-Free Day will take place every second Sunday of the month. This is our effort towards making Shah Alam a low-carbon city by 2030," he said.
