National flood update: Continued improvement in Pahang, Johor

KUANTAN: Pahang, still the worst flood-affected state in the nation, continues to register improvement, with 2,100 evacuees from 583 families at 35 relief centres as of 6am this morning.

This is in comparison to the same period yesterday, when there were 2,394 evacuees from 688 families at 48 relief centres.

Pahang Civil Defence Force (APM) director Colonel Zainal Yusoff said there are only four districts still affected by flood.

"Pekan has the highest number of evacuees, with 1,485 people from 412 families," he said.

Other districts, like Maran, has 436 evacuees from 123 families; Bera (38 people from 10 families) and Kuantan (141 people from 38 families).

According to Bernama, JOHOR’s evacuee number also continues to drop, with 672 people at relief shelters as of 8am today, from 702 people last night.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the flood victims, from 185 families, are at 16 evacuation centres in Segamat, Muar and Tangkak districts.

Some roads, however, still remain closed to traffic.

"Jalan Pogoh-Tekam in Segamat is open in one lane and for heavy vehicles only, while Jalan Kampung Sungai Pinggan in Pontian is cut off due to a bridge collapse," Ayub said in a statement here.

However, Bernama reports that there has been no change in PERAK, with the number of evacuees remaining at 270 people as of 8.30am today, according to the Social Welfare Department's flood portal.

The victims are being accommodated at four evacuation centres, with 208 of them at Sekolah Agama Rakyat Padang Serai in the Manjung district.

The others are at Dewan Orang Ramai Taman Bersatu Simpang Pulai in the Kinta district (42 people), Surau Padang Serai Dalam in the Larut Matang district (13 people) and Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Belanja Kanan, Parit, in Perak Tengah (seven people). -- Bernama
