Tanjong Datu by-election campaigning off to a mixed start [VIDEO]

LUNDU: Two of the three candidates contesting in the Tanjong Datu state seat by-election seem to be off to a slow start.

It is learnt that contenders from the State Reform Party (Star) and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) are still in the midst of devising plans for their election campaign.

Star's candidate for the by-election, Johnny Aput, 54, said he will only begin his campaign tomorrow.

"The party is in the midst of making arrangements for our campaign. We want to ensure we are adopting the right approach to win support from the Tanjong Datu constituents," he told the New Straits Times when contacted today.

Fellow contender Rapelson Richard Hamit of PBDS Baru, meanwhile, did not provide a date for when he will kick off his campaign trail.

The two candidates are going up against Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB)’s, Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, widow of incumbent Tanjong Datu assemblyman Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who was also the 5th Chief Minister.

Unlike both parties, PBB, which is the backbone of Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN), started hitting the ground running today.

Tanjong Datu PBB Women chief Fatimah Abdullah said the movement will conduct door-to-door visits at several villages to campaign for Jamilah.

"More activities will be carried out in the coming days," she said.
