Saifuddin urges restraint in by-election campaign speeches

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has reminded everyone involved in the by-election campaign to refrain from making insensitive statements particularly those related to the 3R (race, religion and royalty).

Saifuddin said that a vibrant election campaign was anticipated; therefore, all participants had been urged to control their speeches and writing in accordance with the regulations.

He said the election campaign was expected to get lively, therefore everyone is advised to adhere to the rules and regulations and control their speeches and even writing.

He said the Inspector-general of Police Tan Sri Razaruddin Husin yesterday met with police in Kuala Kubur Bahru to remind them of the need to remain professional throughout the election campaign period.

"The police focus is on ensuring tight security, and that was the reminder conveyed by the Inspector-General of Police in last night's meeting.

"We suggest all parties to avoid and stay away from whatever disruptive elements or those unsuitable to be expressed in our diverse multicultural society.

"This campaign is only 12 days, once the campaign is over, the people of KKB will continue their lives, so let's not create unrest," he said in a press conference after launching theCrime Prevention Carnival in collaboration with the police, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and strategic partners with the local community.

The KKB by-election will see a four–cornered fight between DAP's Pang Sock Tao who will represent Pakatan Harapan, Khairul Azhari Saut a Perikatan Nasional's candidate and Hafizah Zainuddin who is running on a Parti Rakyat Malaysia ticket.

Nyau Ke Xin is running as an independent.

Polling day is set for May 11, with early voting scheduled for May 7.
