Abang Johari wants new economy policy to boost e-commerce in state

KUCHING: Sarawak will seek advice from international experts to formulate an economy policy that will suit the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Abang Openg said he needs a policy which can transform conventional businesses in Sarawak befitting the e-commerce world.

“I’m still new (as chief minister) so I (plan) to have a conference with experts throughout the globe to get some input before deciding on the policy.

“Although we have a lot of resources, our population is very small. Thus, we need a policy which can allow our community to expand their business further.

“E-commerce or digital business is the way to reach out to more (customers) even at the international level,” he said.

Speaking at the Chinese New Year dinner host by the Association Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak here, Abang Johari said he hoped he could announce the plan in the next six month.

“Give me six months, I hope I can come out with a (economic) plan for Sarawak,” he said.

One of the challenges Sarawak face in moving into the digital world was the information and communication technology (ICT) connectivity.

“We need to further enhance and improve our ICT connectivity, otherwise, it would be tough for us to compete there (online),” he said.

Earlier, he pleaded to fight for all Sarawakians as the Chief Minister, regardless of race.

“I’m the chief minister of the Sarawakians, the Sarawakians’ interests are my top priority and concern,” he stressed.

Therefore, he said he will continue to negotiate with the Federal Government to reclaim rights owing to Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“We want nothing more nothing less. We only want what is rightfully ours,” he said.
