AADK: New drug 'Strawberry Quick' yet to reach Malaysia

MALACCA: The National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) has denied that a new drug, known as 'Strawberry Methaphetamine' or 'Strawberry Quick' has made its way into the country, as being spread in the social media recently.

Its deputy director-general Datuk Izhar Abu Talib said the drug was first distributed in the United States and the Arab countries before it spread to the Indian continent and Southeast Asia.

However, he said, it has not entered the Malaysian market.

"It (the drug) was only distributed among and used by students in the Indian continent before the distribution became widespread in 2010...Originally, it was used and distributed in the United States in 2007," he told reporters after officiating the "Harm Reduction: Malacca Heads Toward HIV 3.0 Free" in conjunction with the Malacca Car Free Zone, here today.

Commenting further, Izhar said although the drug had yet to be detected in the Malaysian market, the community, particularly parents, were encouraged to view the matter seriously and take precautionary measures.

He said this was because it was not impossible that the drug would eventually slipped into the country, adding that parents should remain vigilant by being watchful of the movement, acquaintances and actions of their children and family members.

"The emergence of the new drug can happen in various forms and packages and the target are usually students," he said. - BERNAMA
