Aksem to continue anti-smuggling ops along Kelantan-Thai border

KOTA BARU: Malaysian Border Security Agency (Aksem) will continue to conduct ‘Ops Bersepadu’ with other border agencies to curb smuggling activities along the Kelantan-Thai border area.

Kelantan Aksem commander Mohd Asri Yahya said Ops Bersepadu, which is held every month, involves agencies such as the Customs Department; the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry; and the police.

"The operation is aimed at curbing smuggling and nabbing smugglers who have been making a sizable income from their activities," he said.

Nevertheless, Mohd Asri admitted that it is hard for border agencies to stop the activity entirely, due to the presence of the long and wide Golok river.

"However, it will not hamper our spirit. We (the border agencies) will conduct operations from time to time to put a stop to this menace," he said.

He added that there is no particular time of day or year that smugglers carry out their activities, as they are opportunists who ship goods across the border whenever they can.

"If they have a chance, or if there is no law enforcement present, they will do their job," he said.
