FRU horses will continue to be used in Malaysia-Thai border as 'show of force' against smuggling

KOTA BARU: The six horses used by the General Operations Force (GOF) to help it curb smuggling along the Malaysia-Thailand border since two years ago, will continue to be used as a "show of force" in border patrolling efforts.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali told the New Straits Times that the mounted horse team from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) has been deployed to Kelantan since 2022.

He said the team would continue to assist the GOF in border enforcement.

"Until now, we are still using the horse team in Kelantan to help the GOF members in manning the border area with Thailand.

"Of course it is not easy to handle the horses, but we are handling it. It is not a problem to us," he said.

Besides the Malaysian border in Kelantan, the FRU's mounted horse team are also stationed in the international border in Kedah and Perlis.

In March 2022, Kelantan police eceived six horses which were used as mounted units to help combat smuggling activities along the state's border area.

The horses delivered by the FRU were of the Arabian, Warmblood and Polo breeds.
