Who will be the champions?

KUALA LUMPUR: The search for Malaysia’s best spellers will take place on Oct 10 with 28 of the best spellers in the nation competing at the RHB New Straits Times National Spell-It-Right Challenge (SIR) for prizes worth RM65,000.

It will be a totally different ball game, with five-time reigning secondary champion Kenneth Wu Min Jin no longer competing.

Wu, who became the primary national champion when he first competed in 2009 at the age of 12, was also the national spelling crown five years in a row in the secondary category.

Only two finalists are veterans on the final stage this year: 12-year-old Jaime Ashriya Kumar of SK Sri Tebrau, Johor, is competing for the second time for the primary school category, and 16-year old Darren Leong Wei Jin of SMK St Michael, Perak, who came in second last year, is competing for the secondary school category for the third time.

In Learning Curve this Sunday, SIR Content Committee head, Hazlina Aziz shares her take on the finalists competing this year. Also read how far the competition has come since 2008 when the grand prize was only RM3,000.

All these on Oct 4 in New Sunday Times.
